This qualification is designed to give learners the underpinning knowledge, skills and competencies to use counselling skills ethically and safely in a variety of contexts and roles.

This qualification is for:

  • Those starting the first level of training as a professional counsellor
  • Those who want to learn counselling skills in other professional or helping roles
  • Those who want to improve their professional and personal relationships as part of personal development

CST-L3

Taking bookings for October 2026.

36 weeks academic term time, face-to-face, Maidstone, Kent or on-line

This qualification is intended for candidates who have already acquired a recognised qualification in counselling skills and want to:

  • take the next step in training to become a counsellor
  • learn more about counselling theory, ethics and mental health
  • be prepared for work as a professional counsellor in an agency setting

This qualification leads to employment and increases employability for those whose role is to support others in sectors such as health and social care work, teaching and learning, advocacy and mediation, support and project work, and other helping roles. It provides additional skills for those already in employment and is likely to lead to increased opportunities for promotion and advancement towards practitioner-level qualifications (TC-L4).

TC-L4 APQ

Taking Bookings for October 2026

Two year academic course, a blended course 25% online, the rest face-to-face in Maidstone, Kent.

This two year part-time qualification gives learners the knowledge, skills and competencies to work as a therapeutic counsellor in an agency context in both health care and non-medical settings.

This qualification is officially approved as a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) by Skills England. HTQ status confirms that the TC-L4 meets nationally recognised, employer-defined occupational standards and prepares learners for skilled roles in the counselling profession. As an HTQ, it carries enhanced credibility with employers and supports learners progressing into professional practice or further study.

Successful completion of this course means you will be able to provide a therapeutic counselling service – initially within the context of an agency’s service framework but later (with experience and support from the supervisor, or by completing PC-L5 or its equivalent) may progress to independent practice.

This qualification meets all the requirements of SCoPEd Column A and provides candidates with a route to membership and accreditation with professional associations in counselling approved by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) e.g. BACP, NCPS, ACC.

Supervision is an essential part of safe, ethical, and effective counselling practice. The Butterfield Centre for Counselling Training and Therapy offers supervision to both trainee and qualified counsellors, supporting reflection, professional growth, and the maintenance of high standards of practice.

Why Supervision Matters: Counselling supervision is an essential part of safe, ethical, and effective practice for both trainee and qualified counsellors. It provides a confidential space to reflect on client work, develop professional skills, and maintain high standards of care.

Through supervision, counsellors gain support, guidance, and fresh perspectives, helping to protect client wellbeing while also supporting their own emotional and professional health. Regular supervision encourages ongoing learning, self‑awareness, and ethical accountability, and is a key requirement of professional counselling practice.
